Reason chosen:

The cover drew me in, and I am always a sucker for a Beauty and the Beast tale.

Summary taken from Goodreads:

The Beast

Scarred. Damaged. Living with a terrible secret. Agent of the Underlight Wesley "Hauk" Haukon has nothing left but the fight for liberty against the oppressive Order of Ananke. He's starting to lose hope…and then he sees her.

The Beauty

Despite her night job as a burlesque dancer, grad student Jolie Benoit has always played the mostly good girl. That all changes following a scorching sexual encounter with a stranger whose face she doesn't see. After she's kidnapped by thugs and rescued by a man with a very familiar voice, Jolie becomes a pawn in a struggle she never knew existed.

Hauk knows he cannot have her, and resolves to protect his heart and his secrets. But as they work together and grow closer, he finds new reason to keep fighting. Dare he risk hope in a new life, one where Jolie can see past his ravaged face and where their friendship can grow into something more?

Review:

Warning. This is definitely not for children. This book is very, very much so for adults. As in, this is not your Disney version of Beauty and the Beast. But, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good story. On the contrary, this will be a series I am definitely going to read. Why? Because it’s not all about the adult content, and I love a good romance that also has a good story line, and this is one of them. Not to mention the dystopian society. At least, that’s what I got from it. Its very close to the same as our modern day world but with some tweaks here and there making it seem like a dystopian(ish) society, and, of course, there is an underworld society…that always means interesting things are guaranteed to happen. Now, this book is also something you have to follow along with because there is a lot of politics. There is also some stuff that comes as a bit of a surprise when we learn about Jolie’s past. It did almost seem a little awkward because it wasn’t something that came through in her character right away. Also I didn’t really research the book before I started reading it, so I had no clue it is going to be the first in a series and my mind kept questioning how this was all going to end in such a short novel. It was very stressful for a while, but that was all my fault. Although there are some awkward moments, there are many good ones, there are interesting characters, situations and a promising future for this series.

Good:

Hauk—A pretty decent guy, former army man. Overall sexy even with his scared body, which he keeps ripped by the way. He’s an alpha male, but hides it behind his scars.

Jolie—willing to refuse her father’s money so that she can determine who she really is.

Bad:

Jolie—There are some aspects about her that I’m not to sure about—mainly her choice in men.

Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):

Overall the small novel is filled with romance, action and intrigue. The writing style is well done, but the story moves fast, which means you have to make sure you’re paying attention when you read it. There is minimal humour, but there is some and it’s well placed. There is definitely passion and interesting characters, and a storyline that promises to be an interesting one. I have to admit that although the cover caught my eye the girl on the front is not how I picture Jolie, the dude in the back is how I pictured Hauk, but the girl seems more circus like than the Jolie I pictured. Overall this is a series I will be following.
