Reason chosen:

Because I like Highlanders. These type of books get me where it hurts with their Alpha male warrior characters.

Summary taken from Goodreads:

Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan's clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.

The illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband makes her crave his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin's strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.

Review:

Dearest: Ewan, You’re hot. I love your scowl. And I love how your yell a lot. Oh, and I am completely ok with the way you kiss.
This book was a something I can’t seem to find words to describe. I expected more fight scene, but there was barely any which threw me off a bit. But, there was so much else. There was romance, fighting, brutality, heart felt moments were I was on the brim of crying, moments that I laughed out loud, moments that I thought my knees were going to buckle, sadness, awesome brothers, stubborn women, treason, attempted murders, and so many other things that keep you holding onto the book for dear life. I didn’t expect to be so captivated by this novel, but I was. And there was enough romance, and enough story line that I didn’t feel like the romance was taking over. And the humour…there wasn’t a lot of it, but I loved every moment that Ewan laughed or made a comment. I loved the way people looked at Mairin like she was completely crazy when she stood up to people and refused to take orders. I love that when Ewan bellows at her to go back inside where its safe she sticks out her tongue at him and he laughs. I guess I really enjoyed their relationship together. Then you throw in his son Crispen and I’m balling like a new baby. I like this series so much that I’ve already got my hands on another copy.

Good:

Ewan—Sexy, kisses with tongue (oh, no!) stubborn, determined, protective, loving, manly. That all can be summed up with Mmmmmm….

Mairin—willing to stick up for people and do what is right. You fight to be treated equally and with respect. Overall…you are feisty and I like it.

Alaric and Caelen—Awesome brothers who are devoted to their clan and their family.

Bad:

I honestly thought there would be more fighting. I expected some full on war but there was maybe a page for a battle scene. I wanted to see those boys in action.

Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):

Overall this series was definitely one that I will be continuing. The writing was very well done, the romance felt, the teary moments made me cry, and my heart occasionally felt like it was going to jump out of my chest for joy, sadness and any other emotion you could think of. The characters may have fit the mould we came to expect but there were still moments that surprised me.
