Summary taken from Goodreads:

A warrior is caught between family loyalty and forbidden love in book two of Maya's sensual new trilogy featuring three indomitable Highlanders.

Fiercely loyal to his elder brother, Alaric McCabe leads his clan in the fight for their birthright. Now, he is prepared to wed for duty, as well. But on his way to claim the hand of Rionna McDonald, daughter of a neighboring chieftain, he is ambushed and left for dead. Miraculously, his life is saved by the soft touch of a Highland angel, a courageous beauty who will put his fealty to his clan, his honor, and his deepest desires, to the test.

An outcast from her own clan, Keeley McDonald was betrayed by those she loved and trusted. When the wounded warrior falls from his horse, she is drawn to his strong, lean body. The wicked glint in his green eyes ignites a passion that will follow them back to Alaric’s keep, where their forbidden love draws them deeper into the pleasures of the flesh. But as conspiracy and danger circle closer, Alaric must make an impossible choice. Will he betray his blood ties for the woman he loves

Review:

For some reason I could get into this one. Not as much as the first, and not even as much as the third. I thought about “skimming over it” or, even skipping it all together, but personally I hate doing either one. So, it took me a while to finally finish this book. I had put it down and picked it back up so many times and have even read other books in between. After finally finishing I realized that it really wasn’t that bad, but it just wasn’t up to par with the first book in the series. I’m thinking it was the characters, and how quickly they fell in love. Alaric was unconscious for most of the time and basically viewed Keeley as an angel in his delirious state. After bringing her back to McCabe keep it’s basically them being together and trying to fight their love because Alaric is already promised to another. I’m never really a fan of people falling instantly in love. I like a story that builds up, like the first, in which Ewan and Mairin were married for her protection and to better his clan, and then they fell in love. I guess I like it when the guys think that they cannot give their heart and all that good stuff. Anyhow, the story added on the McCabe trilogy providing a little more info in to the war that is brewing and a new view and in depth knowledge of the McCabe brothers.

Good:

Alaric--trying to be loyal to his brothers and his clan

Keeley--just trying to be independent and trying to survive.

Bad:

There were some parts that were slow, and the they feel in love too quickly for my liking.

Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):

Overall, I can’t deny that the story was still enjoyable, but just fell short compared to the others. It still made my heart fly and the passion between the two characters was crazy good. I found it easy to follow like all of Maya Banks’ books. The story flowed and had a perfect mixture of romance and drama. The characters were unique, yet similar to previous ones in the series (the girls were fiesty and the guys were protective), and I know that I will love continuing this series.
